We started AtScale because we believe that everyone should be able to use all data for all their decisions. We believe that people should have unencumbered and secured access to information, work with data of all shapes, at lighting speed and in the tools they are already familiar with like Tableau and Microsoft Excel.
AtScale was born out of our personal experience and necessity. And after we made our product available, we discovered that we weren’t alone.. Many enterprises need what we’ve also needed. Last year, AtScale grew by more than 5X. Further, our partners have embraced our platform since day one and they’ve helped us to achieve our vision faster than we could imagine - from Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR to Microsoft and Tableau.
Today we are announcing a big milestone in the evolution of our mission: Hortonworks (NASDAQ: HDP) has chosen AtScale as its standard for BI-on-Hadoop. Hortonworks will be reselling AtScale globally starting July 1.
Why make AtScale available via resell?
Hadoop has come a long way since it was first introduced 10 years ago. Cloudera, Hortonworks, MapR and many others have contributed in making the technology available to a large number of enterprises. This past January, Forrester predicted that 100% of enterprises will soon have Hadoop.
However, it’s obvious that making Hadoop enterprise-friendly and consumable by business users is a challenge. The average organization spends close to $8M per year on Big Data. Yet, only a small percentage of decision-makers are satisfied with analytics at their companies.
If you’re a data historian like I am, you know that applications make platforms shine. And you know that analytics is a “Data Platform’s Killer App”. Oracle grew exponentially when companies like BusinessObjects extended its value to business users. Google became the marketer’s best tool when they deployed Google Analytics. Microsoft Windows took off as an operating system because Microsoft Excel became the indispensable application for business users. Put simply, applications deliver value for the platform and we believe that business intelligence is the killer app for Hadoop..
With this partnership, we are making BI-on-Hadoop immediately available to over 800+ Hortonworks customers, a public company credited with being the fastest enterprise software company to ever to reach $100 million in annual revenue. We believe that together we can bring the power of Hadoop to everyone in the enterprise.
How does this affect AtScale’s partnerships with Cloudera and MapR?
It doesn’t. Cloudera is an AtScale customer and Amr Awadallah, Cloudera’s CTO and co-founder, is an investor in AtScale. We continue to have a strong partnership with Cloudera and have a number of shared customer success stories here. We can say the same about MapR where we are delivering value together with customers like American Express.
In short, AtScale is committed to a path of neutrality by partnering with all Hadoop distributions, the same way we support and connect any visualization or BI tool.
What’s Next?
Lots. We have a great partnership with Microsoft and the offer we introduced for Microsoft Azure has already yielded some great customer wins that you’ll hear about soon. In the meantime, I suggest you subscribe to this blog so we can stay in touch!
